Work, Money, and all that Jazz

I have been long been interested in work, and working. .  My first paying job was when I was 13 years old, which required that  I get work papers, and a Doctors clearance.  I have been working pretty continually since.  I have also researched, written about, and published on Work.

To most of the readers, it is no news that we have been and are still devalued and underpaid as workers.  Since the Regan tax manipulation in 1980, the income distribution has become more and more skewed, with the very rich gaining, and the rest of us loosing wealth.  We are all working harder and longer. The US worker is among the most productive in the wold. The societal implications in this trend are huge  (more about this later)

We have little choice, for work we must in our current society.    The real worth of our wages has decreased since the 60's.  Essential goods and services are priced higher and higher.  U.S.manufacturing has shrunk to a shadow of it's past glory.  Well paying jobs are hard to find.

In addition pensions are eroded and becoming a thing of the past. Even Social Security is threatened by the avariciousness of the few. Therefore their is a trend for "retired" workers to find new jobs, crowding the job market, and confusing our past ideas of aging.

The spiral of eroded wages and increased cost continues with the middle class and blue collar worker the losers.   Those of us who work for their living are Workers, whether we consider ourselves workers or not.  It makes no difference if we sit behind a desk, or use a machine.  Without an income that is not generated by our work, we are worker. Unions have been increasingly marginalized, and workers divided from each other by intentional campaigns.

Our Society is left with globalization, corporatization , privatization and the WTO.   In other words exploitation, corruption, pollution, and incredible greed and arrogance.   Workers are in a fix.  Our rights not our privileges are being eroded.  We can no longer deny what is happening to the American Democracy.  The very rich control more and more of the power.  The government is at the beck and call of the corporation owners.  There are practically no politicians who have not sold out.   This is true in the highest level of our government.

The above analysis may be interesting and somewhat useful.  However, analysis is not the same as action.  This is the time for action and solutions.  So I would like to suggest the following.

Organize locally, support unions, march and demonstrate.  Think about, read, and discuss the real issues, not the ones the press promote.  Don't watch TV.  Don't believe the corporate media. Watch and read alternative news sources.   Contact your elected leaders, and tell them what you think. Write and post your ideas. Support local businesses not large corporate entities. Buy organic food.  Grow a garden.  Get to know your neighbor.  Don't despair.  Be cheerful, and look to the future.  Get Active.
